Africa World Airlines has been in operation since 2012 and partnered with Cape Verdean airline Cabo Verde Airlines (CVA) and Brussels Airlines, the member of Lufthansa Group and a Star Alliance member. They are already gaining a presence in African aviation.

Africa World Airlines, or AWA for short, is a regional airline of Ghanaian origin based in Accra, Ghana. They have been touching African skies since September 2012 and continue to soar in success. AWA is the product of a joint venture between Hainan Airlines, China-Africa Development Fund, SSNIT and SAS Finance Group.

AWA are looking to improve their regional route capacity into the West Coast of Africa in the near future.

Popular flight routes with Africa World Airlines are from Accra to Lagos, Abuja to Dubai, Lagos to Johannesburg, Lagos to Kaduna and from Lagos to Accra.

Checked baggage allowance for Premium (Business Class) and Value (Economy Class) passengers is two bags per passenger, not exceeding 23 kg depending on the load factor on a flight.

Excess kilos exceeding 23 kg will attract a fee.

AWA accepts sporting equipment. A standard fee of 30GHC (25 kg) applies to all sporting equipment. An overweight fee of 20GHC/KG applies if the equipment is above 25 kg.

AWA only allows one piece of cabin baggage plus one smaller personal-type item such as small handbags for men/women, small cameras, reading material, laptop bags and small backpacks onboard the aircraft. It should weigh no more than 5kg and be able to fit under the seat in front of you. It is recommended travelling with soft-side bags so that they can be made to fit in the overhead bin and under the seat in front of you.

Cabin bags that do not fit in the overhead bin or under the seats will be placed in the hold of the aircraft and will be handed over to passengers upon disembarkation.

AWA currently only offers one way to check in, however implementation of online check-in is said to be coming soon.

Over the counter check-in: Check-in for all passengers’ starts from 2 hours to scheduled departure time and ends 40 minutes to the departure time. Customers who are unable to check-in within the stipulated time could be denied boarding. 

A valid national photo ID card will be required for check-in. Foreign residents will be required to produce their passports as a form of identification for domestic flights. For regional flights, a passport is required with a valid visa where applicable.

Africa World Airlines offers clients the option of Premium, Promo and Value classes. All three options are serviced in one cabin with differences in baggage, seating and boarding priorities.

Africa World Airlines has, a for the most part, been servicing domestic routes within Ghana to 3 destinations in total. However, the airline has and is still expanding regionally opening up to Freetown, Sierra Leone.
